Feminisation of education

- schools do not nurture/ value traditional ‘masculine’ traits e.g competiveness, leadership, authoritative which are traits that boys are socialised into
- makes boys feel unvalued as they dont feel very comfortable in their atmosphere

Shortage of primary school teachers
A
- lack of role model for boys as they feel like if they had more male role models they would be more motivated
- value connection
- if more teachers are female they will see learning as more feminine
HOWEVER - more male teachers are coming into education

Laddish subculture
A
- develops from peer pressure
- name calling, homophobic slurs etc and this develops an anti school subculture as they do not want to show what is deemed as non masculine traits
HOWEVER - there is alot more mentoring schemes to help overcome narrow gender identities

Subject choice
A
- gendered subject choice becomes more noticeable when students move onto A-levels.
- boys opt for maths, physics whereas girls choose subjects like eng lit, sociology
Fiona norman (1988) - from an early age boys and girls are dressed differently, given different toys and encouraged to take part in different activities which impacts their future choices

- pupils see sport as manly and girls who enjoy sport have to cope with the image that contradicts the traditional female stereo type
- seen in when students pick their subject choices
HOWEVER - pupils who attend single sex schools tend to hold less stereotypes within subjects
- take more maths and science subjects while boys make take english and languages
