-gave them confidence to work outside the home
- WISE, GIST leading to STEM
- changed girls ambitions
Changes in family
-more LPFs due to an increase in divorce rates
- girls have to prepare for breakups and already know divorce is likely to happen and in the end having to become financially independent
- leads to them having higher qualifications and encourages them to take it more seriously
- gives them motivation to do better so they can support themselves
Changes in womens employement
- laws - 1970s equal pay act which tells women they are worth just as much as men
- these laws made women feel valued in the workplace which would encourage and motivate them as they know it would actually get these women somewhere
- girls literacy levels - “bedroom culture”
Feminism
- gave girls confidence which changed girls ambitions and encouraged them to try harder in school
Family - knew it led to divorce so would become single- knew they would need to be financially dependent which led them to try harder in schools
Workplace - new laws came about which meant women were valued in the workplace so it motivated them to work harder
Symbolic capital within girls
- had hypersexual feminine identity
- cared more about boyfriends and being loud
-saw it was masculine to want to work hard and do good and their main aim was to get a family so they didn’t neccesarily see a point in doing homework etc
