1880 increased the need for an educated workforce and from the 19th century the state began to become more influenced in education

1870 education act
A
- aimed to fill the gaps left by church and charity schools
- provided state run elementary schools for five to eleven years old
- charged a fee and it was made free in 1891

1902 education act
A
- state secondary education
- new Local Education Authorities (LEAs) were given power to establish new secondary and technical schools

The tripartite system 1945 to 1965
A
- Five giants led to this
- changed the secondary school system and consisted of 3 secondary schools
-grammar school ( for bright students )
-secondary modern ( less academic students )
-technical college
what school you went to were determined by your 11+ exams

Evaluation points
A
- 11+ exams were unreliable as it was biased towards the middle class as they had more cultural capital
- No parity of esteem - no equality between schools as grammar schools had a higher status and secondary modern was seen as second rate
- social class divisions - there was no social mixing as m/c still went to grammar schools compared to a quarter of the w/c
