Implicit bias
Activation of amygdala stronger when shown black face compared to white.
Even when asked about conscious racist feelings, IAT (implicit bias) correlated beter.
Most people have a negative implicit bias towards black people. Start at very young age, worse when you get older. Almost every non-black race has this (neutral for black people)
Amygdala
Very important for fear conditioning (no fear if no amyg)
Negative valuations are caused by constant exposure to association between black people and negative things.
Influence implicit bias
Actually strongly effects decisions;
- doctors treat patients differently
- give less directions
- hire less quickly
Why we think we have free will
Post-hoc rationalization (4 identical socks)
- Choices driven by recency effect
- No one answered that, argued nonsense
Choice blindness (woman preference)
- given other card than chosen one, 76% didn’t notice
- even motivate choice forced upon them
The brain interpreter;
- Left hemisphere puts information together and makes final narrative.
- Seen in split brain patients, don’t know info from right but still tries to make sense of it
The primary role of the I seems to be to explain what we are doing, and predict what will happen. It’s not actually the cause of the behaviour, its the explanation. Evolutionary functional, understanding intentions of our environment. mistake seems to be that we interpret our own intentions in the same manner.
