Integumentary System Flashcards
Actinic Keratosis
A premalignant warty lesion occurring on sun-exposed skin of the face or hands in ages, light-skinned people
Alopecia
Loss of hair
Basal Cell Carcinoma
A slow growing malignant neoplasm
Benign Lesion
A tumor not forming metastases and not invading and destroying adjacent normal tissue
Biopsy
Removal of tissue from a patient for macroscopic diagnostic examination.
Congenital Nevus
A melanocytic nevus visible at birth, often larger than an acquired nevus
Contact Dermatitis
Acute or chronic dermatitis caused by initial irritant effect of a substance coming in contact with the skin
Debridement
Removal of foreign materials, necrotic matter, and devitalized tissue from a wound or burn
Debridement
Removal of foreign materials, necrotic matter and devitalized tissue from a wound or burn. Done to remove infected tissue.
Decubitus Ulcer
Focal ischemic necrosis of skin and underlying tissues at sites of contact pressure or recurring friction
Delayed Primary Closure (tertiary intention)
A combination of primary and secondary closure. After decontamination and cleansing, the wound is left open to watch for a couple of days. When the wound appears to be on its way to healing, it is closed surgically
Dermabrasion
Procedure used to remove acne scars or puts, performed with sandpaper or other abrasive materials
Dermatofibroma
A slow-growing benign skin nodule consisting of poorly demarcated cellular fibrous tissue
Dermatologist
A physician specializing in diagnosing and treating cutaneous and related systemic diseases
Dermatome
An instrument for cutting thin slices of skin for grafting or excising small lesions
Dermis
Directly below the epidermis, the dermis is the second layer of the skin
Epidermis
Outer layer of the skin
Eschar
A thick, crusty covering or slough developing after thermal or chemical burn or cauterization of the skin
Gynecomastia
Excessive development of the male mammary glands
Impetigo
A contagious superficial pyoderma, cause by Staph or group A Strep
Intradermal Nevus
A nevus in which nests of melanocytes are found in the dermis, but not at the epidermal-dermal junction
Keloid
A nodular, firm, often linear mass of hyperplastic, thick scar tissue
Lumpectomy
Surgical removal of a tumor or other lump from the breast along with some surrounding tissue
Mammaplasty
Plastic surgery for altering the breast(s) size by enlarging or reducing the breasts
Mastectomy
Surgical removal of one or both breasts to improve the loos of sagging breast(s)
Mycoses
Any disease caused by a fungus
Necrosis
Pathologic death of one or more cells, or of a portion of tissue or organ resulting from irreversible damage
Nevus
A circumscribed malformation of the skin, especially one that is colored by hyperpigmentation. Mole or birthmark.
Pilonidal Cyst
Hair containing cyst or sinus in the tissues of the sacrococcygeal area
Primary Closure (primary intention)
Edges of a wound are even and well-approximated. These wounds heal very quickly. A good example of a wound that healed by primary closure is a surgical incision
Pruritis
Relating to itching
Psoriasis
A common inherited condition characterized by the eruption of reddish, silvery scaled maculopapules
Sebaceous Cyst
A common cyst of the skin containing sebum and keratin
Seborrhea
Overactivity of the sebaceous gland resulting in an excessive amount of sebum
Secondary Closure (secondary intention)
Occurs then the edges of a wound cannot be brought together. The wound gradually tills in and heals on its own. Areas such as the forehead or temple may heal better by secondary intention
Fine Needle Aspiration
Biopsy performed.Fine needle inserted to collect cells to examine.
Abscess
Tender pink or red mass full of bacteria and debris
Furuncle
Boil full of infected hair follicle and has small collection of fluid under skin
Carbuncle
Cluster of boils connected to each other
Pilonidal Cyst
Cyst above buttocks usually full of skin and hair debris
Hematoma
f blood that collects outside of the larger blood vessels such as a bruise
Seroma
Collection of clear fluid in tissue that can occur after surgery, injury or blunt trauma
Necrotizing
causing the death of tissues
corrosion
burn from chemical
Fascia
is a band or sheet of connective tissue, primarily collagen, beneath the skin that attaches, stabilizes, encloses, and separates muscles and other internal organs.
Vacuum Assisted Closure VAC
If listed used in debridement, add in addition to Debridement codes. Found by looking up: Wound/Care/Negative Pressure Therapy referring you to 97605-97608. Report 97607 for utilizing disposable non-durable medical equipment.
Corn
Thickened skin on toes or feet caused by skin friction
Paring or Cutting
To remove by cutting off or peeling away the other coat. To gradually decrease the surface or part of something. Used for corn or callus.
Incision and Drainage
Used for acne, abscess, cyst, hematoma etc. Complicated includes wound packaging.
Non pigmented Nevus
Benign and slow growing mole
Seborrheic Keratosis
Benign lesion in older poeple
Warts
Skin growth caused by HPV virus
Rhinophyma
Condition in which skin is thickened usually on the nose
Molluscum Contagiosum
Skin infection caused by Molluscum virus which results in raised lesions and bumps
Angiofibroma
Papules on nose or cheeks that contain fibrous tissue
Cauterization
Heat or chemical is used to destroy abnormal cells or seal a wound
Papiloma
Wart like benign growth
Cutaneous Horn
Conical shaped lesion composed of compacted keratin
Dermafibroma
benign fibrous tumor
Skin Tags
Projections from the surface of the skin. AKA Acrochordon
Stucco Keratosis
Church spire like projections of the epidermal cells of the skin
Keratoacanthoma (KA)
Low grade skin cancer originates in hair follicles
mm to cm
1mm = 0.1 cm; 14 mm = 1.4 cm
Squamous Cell Cariconoma
Major form of skin cancer
Ablation
Removal of skin tissue can be carried out by chemicals (chemoablation), by lasers (laser ablation), by freezing (cryoablation), or by electricity (fulguration). Its purpose is to remove skin spots, aged skin, wrinkles, thus rejuvenating it
Lipoma
Slow growing, fatty lump, rarely cancerous, just under the skin
Repair Codes
Used for closure of wounds. Can be simple, intermediate or complex. Definition is listed in beginning of the section before codes.
Extirpation
Complex removal of organ or tissue
First Degree Burns
outermost layer of skin (epidermis)
Second Degree Burns
Epidermis and dermis
Third Degree Burns
Epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue
Escharotomy
Escharotomy, for third degree burns involves full thickness incision of the circumferential burn down to the subcutaneous fat, in order to release constricting unyielding eschar.
Tissue Block
Each piece of tissue, mounted on a slide for microscopic examination. Part of Mohs Micrographic Surgery where they evaluate each tissue to see if cancerous and allows minimum tissue removal.
