what is the integumentary system
the largest organ in the body, forms a physical barrier between the external and internal environment
what is the skin
largest organ, outer layer, 2mm thick in most places but it fluctuates in certain areas. 12 - 15% of body weight
what is the epidermis
outermost layer
made up of stratified squamous epithial tissue cells and is divided into 4 sublayers:
- stratified corneum
- stratified granulosum
- stratified basale
an additional layer is in thicker parts such as the palms and feet, tjis is called the stratified lucidum
what is the dermis
middle layer
protects and supports body
had blood vessles, sensory nerve receptors and response to stimuli
structure and function of claws
narrow, arched structure that curves downwards from the end of digits. they are apapted for each species. hardened with keratin. they are adapted for clutching, scratching, digging or climbing.
structure of horns
permanent pointed projections on the head of mammals. its covered in keratin and other proteins surrounding a core of live bone.
what are cloven hooves
divided into approx 2 equal parts
which animals are cephalopods
octopus, squid and cuttlefish
adaptations of the cephalopods skin
their skin blends in with the natural environment. their skin is mad of stacks of thin cells thay can reflect light. by combining the reflection with the correct patterns to mimic the natural environment
