epithelial tissues Flashcards
what are epithelial tissues
tissues that cover the outside of organs and structures in the body and line the lumens of organs in a single layer or multiple layers of cells.
what does it mean if an epithelial tissue is referred to as simple epithelial
the tissue is composed of a single layer of cells
what does it mean if an epithelial tissue is referred to as stratified epithelial
the tissue is composed of multiple layers of cells
what is squamous epithelial tissue
- flat, irregular round shape, cells fit together to form a lining
- simple: lung alveoli, capillaries, lymphatic vessles, facilitates diffusion in tissues
- stratified: top layer of skin, mouth, vagina
what is cuboidal epithelial tissue
- cube shaped, central nucleus
- glands, renal tubules
- usually single layers
what is columnar epithelial tissue
- tall, narrow
- nucleus toward base in simple and along cell in pseudostratified
- simple: digestive tract, cilia help move mucous and trapped particles
- pseudostratified: respiratory tract,
- absorb material from lumen of the digestive tract and prepare it for entry into the body through circulatory and lymphatic systems.
what is transitional epithelial tissue
- round, simple but appear stratified
- urinary bladder
Function of epithelial tissues
Protection, secretion, absorption and excretion
what is skelatal muscle
- attached to bone
- voluntary and involuntary reflexes
- ## long cylindrical cells
what is smooth muscle
- walls of hollow organs, blood vessles, eyes, glands, skin
- involuntary movements
- slow, wave like contractions
- spindle shaped
what is cardiac muscle
- involuntary movements
- branching cells
what is connective tissue made up of
a complex matrix of:
- extracellular fibres
- ground substance
- cells
what is ground substance in connective tissue
- ranges from liquid gel or solid
- liquid : cells exchange nutrients and waste in the fluid of the bloodstream
- Gel: acts as a shock-absorbing cushion in joints
- solid, Calcified - bone
what are the 3 types of fibres in connective tissue
- collagen
- reticular
- elastic
what are collagen fibres
thick and strong
ligaments and tendons
what are reticular fibres
- thin, delicate, branched
- organs
what are elasic fibres
- coiled and branched
- vocal cords, lungs, skin, walls of blood vessles
what do fixed cells
Remain in the tissue and produce/maintain the matrix
what are wandering cells
cells that are able to move more freely to complete jobs
