What are the 4 elements of a TCAS?
- Transponder (Mode S for TCAS II)
- Antenna
- TCAS computer
- Cockpit display
What’s the difference between TCAS I and TCAS II?
TCAS I only provides TA
TCAS II also provides RA
What does a white hollowed out losange indicate on a TCAS display?
Non-conflicting traffic farther than 1.200 ft and 6 NM.
What does a white filled out losange indicate on a TCAS display?
Non-conflicting traffic within 1.200 ft and 6 NM.
What does a yellow disc indicate on a TCAS display?
TA, traffic has entered the caution area.
What does a red disc indicate on a TCAS display?
RA, traffic has entered the warning area.
What are the 3 areas created around the aircraft by a TCAS?
- The caution area (15 to 48 sec to collision area) TA
- The warning area (15 to 35 sec to collision area) RA
- The collision area
What do you need to do after resolving an RA?
Advise ATC.
What does the TCAS STBY mode do?
It inhibits TAs while on the ground.
What does the TCAS XPDR mode do?
It de-activates the TCAS only providing TCAS information to other traffic but not receiving.
Which TCAS mode should be used in normal operations?
TA/RA (mandatory in CAT)
What do the different colours of the speed band correspond to?
DSB = 1.3 Vs = Vref
Yellow band = from 1.2 to 1.1 Vs
Red band < 1.1 Vs
What is the technical term for the green banana?
Couldn’t find any specific term in the ACE manual but something along the lines of “Altitude capture target” sounds about right.
