What are the relationship of the organs and the eyes?
• Eyes: pupil = kidney, sclera = lungs, iris = liver, canthus = heart, eyelid & surrounds = spleen and lower lid = stomach
What should healthy lips look like?
• Healthy lips should be plump, pale red and moist/shiny
What are the indications of lips?
- Lips: pale = blood/yang deficiency, red = heat, scarlet = toxic heat, purple = blood stasis, bluish = blood stasis from cold, greenish around mouth = liver qi stasis
- Cracked or peeled lips =deficiency of fluids, dryness, swollen = toxic heat, drooling = spleen deficiency and deviated = wind
What are the gates on a children’s index finger?
• The three gates: wind gate = involves the wei qi, the disease is mild, Qi gate = involves the channels and the disease is strong and Life gate = involves the Zang Fu, the disease is severe or life-threatening.
How do you examine the finger vein?
How to examine the finger vein: hold the index finger out and rub the vein and run 5 times.
Infants index finger:
deficient = narrow, disappears under pressure,
deep: interior pattern, faint in colour, pale red (cold, qi deficiency, blood deficiency), pale yellow (spleen deficiency), white (malnutrition, food stagnation from deficiency).
Infants index finger: excess wide, persists under pressure, superficial (exterior pattern), bright red (external heat), reddish purple (internal heat, phlegm heat, bluish purple (pain, internal window) and bluish violet or black (blood stasis, severe phlegm accumulation.
What is excreta and secretions?
- Information from fluids that are being secreted from the body
- Excreta = waste matter expelled from the body including sweat, urine and stools
- Secretions = lubricating fluids secreted from the orifices such as tears saliva and nasal discharge
What are the five humours?
• The five humours: heart = sweat, Lung = nasal mucus, Liver = tears, Spleen = drool and Kidney = spittle
What are the indications of secretions?
• Yellow and scanty = heat, thick/formed/strong odour = excess or heat, white/profuse = cold, thin/formless/odourless = deficiency or cold
