inorganic chemistry Flashcards

1
Q

test for ammonia

A
  • hold a test tube with test solution over a bunsen burner
  • hold damp red litmus paper near the mouth of test tube but not inside and not touching the sides as it still needs oxygen to react, if damp red litmus paper turns blue, then ammonia gas has been formed

Q

test for carbon dioxide

A
  • you need to bubble the gas through an aqueous solution of limewater, the limewater will be colourless, if it turns milky/cloudy then the gas was carbon dioxide

Q

test for chlorine gas

A
  • uses litmus paper
  • litmus paper will turn red from blue and then turn white if chlorine gas is present
  • it reacts with water to produce an acidic solution which is also an effective bleach which is why the litmus paper turns white after
  • needs to be handled in a fume cupboard as it is toxic

Q

test for hydrogen gas

A
  • in the test tube there should be a magnesium strip and hydrochloric acid and you need to put a stopper on the test tube, wait a while,
  • then take the stopper off and hold the lighted splint of wood near the open mouth of the test tube
  • a loud pop should happen if there is hydrogen gas present
