Infrared Spectroscopy Flashcards
1
Q
What type of molecules don’t absorb infrared light?
A
Molecules don’t absorb infrared light if they contain only one element, and they’re symmetrical.
2
Q
How does infrared spectroscopy work?
A
Infrared spectroscopy involves shining various frequencies of infrared light through a sample and detecting the level of transmittance.
Looking at which frequencies had low levels of transmittance can tell us what bonds are present in a molecule.
3
Q
Describe the appearance of a C-H absorbtion
A
- Around 3000
- Quite thick
- Tends to have a notch
4
Q
What is the appearance of O-H absorbtions?
A
- Thick
- Smooth curve
