Enthalpy of solution/hydration Flashcards
What happens when an ionic salt is dissolved in water?
When an ionic salt is dissolved in water, the ionic lattice or lattice breaks up into ions.
These ions interact with the polar water molecules to form hydrated ions , which are held together by ion-dipole or ion dipole forces.
Define enthalpy change of solution
The enthalpy change when 1 mole of a solute, in its standard state, dissolves in water to form aqueous ions.
What is the equation for the enthalpy change of solution for potassium iodide?
KI (s) -> K+ (aq) + I- (aq)
Breaking apart an ionic lattice is what kind of process?
endothermic
The ion-dipole attraction between ions and polar water molecules is what kind of process?
exothermic
Ionic salts can have which kind of enthalpy of solution?
endothermic or exothermic
Define lattice enthalpy
The enthalpy change when one mole of an ionic lattice is formed from its gaseous ions under standard conditions
How would you measure enthalpy change of solution?
q=mcΔT
