Text
A written or typed format of information. It provides detailed summaries and explanations and can be written in different languages but large amounts can be difficult and time consuming to read
Graphics
A visual form of information that can be understood by people all over the world and is an engaging a method of presenting information. However images take longer to load than text.
Video
A visual format of information often with audio that is engaging and easy to follow and can convey a message in a short amount of time. However it takes a long time to make and takes up a lot of storage.
Numerical
Information that can be represented by numbers. Its easy to understand and manage and can be presented in different ways to visualise data. But human error can lead to mistakes being made.
Animated graphics
Images with multiple frames. Its easy to understand but takes a long time to create
Audio
An information type that uses sound waves. It can be used by the visually impaired users and those who prefer it but may not be suitable in certain environments
Tactile images
A form of physical information that can be interpreted by touch. It can be used by visually impaired people to better understand the physical environment but is difficult to share compared to other information styles.
Subtitles
A textual form of information that can be shown alongside visual data. Can be used for hearing impaired users and in noisy environments but they can be wrong sometimes and take a long time.
Tables and spreadsheets
Can be used to store numerical and textual data ready for analysis. Its good for organising data and allows multiple user access but there is a lack of security and learning syntax for tables takes skill.
Braille
A type of tactile image that represents numbers and letters. It allows visually impaired users to interact with a computer system but isn’t used by many people and can only display a certain amount of information at once.
Charts and graphs
Can be used to present numerical data in a format that’s is easier to visualise and understand. It can summarise data into one image but it can be misleading and present wrong data if the numerical data is wrong.
Boolean
A data type that can have only one out of two specified values. They are commonly yes/no or true/false
