Inflammation Flashcards
What are the four (Or five) signs of inflammation?
Pain, redness, swelling, heat, possible loss of function
What are the five Rs of inflammation?
Recognition, Recruitment, Removal, Regulation, Resolution
What are the components of inflammation?
Plasma proteins, extracellular matrix, vascular endothelial cells
How does vasculature respond to inflammation?
Initial vasoconstriction, vasodilation of arterioles to increase blood flow to local area/engorge capillary bed/cause redness, then increased intravascular pressure to push fluid out of vessels, increased vascular permeability, endothelial cell contraction and then retraction
What is the difference between transudate, modified transudate, and exudate?
Transudate: Contains water and electrolytes, no proteins/cells
Modified Transudate: Contains water and electrolytes with high proteins but no cells
Exudate: Contains water and electrolytes, along with high proteins and inflammatory cells
Name four types of inflammatory exudate.
Purulent, mucopurulent, fibrinous, fibronecrotic
What two results of chronic inflammation are different than acute inflammation?
Angiogenesis and fibrosis
What are the five steps of movement of leukocytes into tissue?
Margination, rolling, attachment, transmigration, chemotaxis
How do leukocytes find the area of inflammation?
Using bacterial components as a chemoattractant
Which two RBCs can perform phagocytosis?
Macrophages and neutrophils
What is BALT?
Bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue
