What is a CBC (with WBC differential) ?
complete blood count
- high WBC= infection
What is CRP and ESR ?
C-reactive protein & Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate
- increased levels shows inflammation in the body
What is a serologic test ?
when we suspect someone had a specific disease
- antibodies or virus)
What are Antiseptics ?
inhibits growth of microorganisms but doesn’t kill it
- goes on living tissue
- Ex.) CHg
What is Disinfectant ?
kills organisms
- used on nonliving objects cause it can harm living objects
- Ex.) bleach
What is Empiric Therapy ?
treatment of infection before specific infection culture info is obtained
- done in emergencies where you can’t wait
What is Prophylactic Therapy ?
treatment with antibiotics to prevent an infection
- like in intrabdominal surgery or after trauma
What is Glomerulonephritis ?
infection that can happen if you don’t finish full course of penicillin for strep
What is Clostridium Difficile (C. Diff) ?
bacteria overgrowth causing inflammation of the colon
- use of antibiotics increases risk of this
- Symptoms: watery diarrhea, decreased in appetite, abdominal pain, nausea
What is Red Person Syndrome ?
adverse reaction when you give Vancomycin too fast
What is the therapeutic use for Penicillin ?
to treat bacterial pneumonia, strep or broad-spectrum infections
What is the therapeutic use for Azithromycin ?
treats similar things to penicillin
- 1st drug of choice if pt. is allergic to penicillin
- very heavy on the liver
What are the therapeutic uses for Ciprofloxacin ?
wide range of bacterial infection
- prevents anthrax
What are the therapeutic uses for Vancomycin ?
treat C. Diff and MRSA
What is the therapeutic uses for Isoniazid ?
latent and active TB
