Indigestion/Antacids etc... Flashcards
Dyspepsia is another name for
Indigestion
Indigestion caused by
overeating, ulcers, drugs, anxiety, stress and pregnancy
Ulcers cause
pain, bleeding and damage to mucosal membrane of stomach/oesophagus.
Antacids neutralise
stomach acid
Antacids usually consist of
calcium, aluminium and magnesium
Antacids react with gastric juices to form what
a floating raft
Antispasmoidics reduce
gut mobility
Gut mobility stimulants increase
peristalsis
Diarrhoea can be treated with
Oral rehydration therapy and antidiarrhoeals (opioid related drugs) which decrease peristalsis.
Protein Pump Inhibitors end in
zole…..e.g- Lansoprazole
Protein pump inhibitors bind to protein pumps which can never
form acid again
PPI’s can unfortunately
interfere with other important drugs
Bulk forming laxatives action
increase faecal mass, stimulate peristalsis, take a few days to work, e.g- ispaghula husk and sterculia.
Stimulant laxatives increase
peristalsis
Osmotic laxatives action
draw water into intestine, water makes it easier to defecate.
