Drugs & Endocrine system Flashcards
Hyperthyroidism the CNS, CV System and metabolic are all
activated and increased
With underactive goitre not enough what is made
Iodine, so t3 & t4 are insufficient.
In overactive goitre (hyperthyroidism) the thyroid gland has an increased
size and rate of function
Graves disease is assosciated with overactive or underactive goitre
overactive.
The activation of TSH receptors by antibodies can cause what
graves disease
Treatment for hyperthyroidism
supression techniques only but carbimazole limits iodine intake, long term treatment= surgery
Carbimazole inhibits
synthesis of thyroxine
People suffering from hypothyroidism need a substitute for what
thyroxine (t4)
Calcitriol
raises calcium levels
Calcitonin is very expensive but helps to lower
calcium levels
Parathyroid hormone increase reabsorption of
calcium
Hypo means
not enough/too low
Hypercalcaemia is urgent and severe as it causes
kidney stones and can lead to cardiac arrest
Hypercalcaemia is treated with
calcitonin and biphosphates
Biphosphates liked alendronic acid cannot be taken alongside
food
