What English tense does the futur simple correspond to?
Future simple (will + verb)
Use the futur simple to talk about future intentions:
- Demain je rangerai les dossiers.
Tomorrow I will sort the files. (ranger)
Use the futur simple to make predictions about the future:
- Tu ne finiras jamais en une journée.
You’ll (inf.) never finish that in one day. (finir)
Use the futur simple in conditional sentences:
- Si on range à deux, on finira plus vite.
If we (s.) tidy up together, we’ll be done faster.
Use the futur simple in sentences that contain a subordinate clause introduced by quand, lorsque, or dés que:
- Nous sortirons quand la pluie s’arrêtera.
We’ll (pl.) go out when the rain stops.

When speaking of future events, when would one use futur simple instead of futur proche?
For events in the more distant future. (dans une semaine, l’année prochaine…)
Futur proche is used for more immediate events. (dans une minute, dans une heure, ce soir…)
Si tu peins la pièce de cette couleur, je détesterai ça.
If you paint the room this colour, I will hate it. (détester)
