Incomplete and co-dominance Flashcards
What is incomplete dominance
When neither allele is dominent, so both alleles mix together resulting in a different phenotype
What is an example of incomplete dominance
Red and white flowers mix together to get pink flowers
What does “C” in complete dominance mean? (ex: CʳCʳ)
It means colour
The letters next to the C are what?
The alleles (ex: C ʳC ʳ, r means red)
In incomplete dominance, if an organism is heterozygous, what does that make them?
The offspring
In plants, the gene for flower colour is controlled by incomplete dominance. What will be the genotype and phenotype of the F1 generation when breeding a white and red flower
Genotype: 100% C ʳ C ʷ
Phenotype: 100% pink
What is co-dominance
When the offspring show BOTH traits of parents
What is an example of co-dominance
a black bear + a white bear = black and white bear
What does roan mean
When both traits are visible on offspring
In shorthorn cattle, the gene that is responsible for the colour of the cattle is controlled by co-dominance. The genotype for the red bull is H ʳ H ʳ, the genotype for white cows is H ʷ H ʷ and the roan calves is H ʳ H ʷ. What will be the genotype and phenotype ratios of the F1 generation when crossing a red bull with a white cow
Genotype: 100% H ʳ H ʷ
Phenotype: 100% Red and white roan calves
What is the difference between co-dominance and incomplete dominance
Co-dominance phenotype is a mix of both parents, incomplete dominance is a completely different phenotype
