Imperialism Flashcards

Q

What was American Imperialism? Was it justified?

A

American Imperialism was where the United States began to expand beyond out borders into islands and other countries that were not on the mainland. The United States did this because our industries needed new markets to grow and make more money from because some products became unneeded or abundant on the mainland. This was justified because the United States was in a time where we were still a young country, and it was important to expand so that other countries would take us seriously. Also, imperialism allowed the United States to make more money that would allow us to build great things and fight important wars in the future.

Q

What was the Roosevelt Corollary? What impact did it have on his foreign policy?

A

The Roosevelt Corollary was basically the Monroe Doctrine, but with more force. It told Europe that this is our sphere of influence, and that they were to stay out. It said that the United States would be the first to help with any issues, and then France would come in. It had the message that the United States was not the International Police. Roosevelt’s policy said “Walk softly and carry a big stick.” This corollary affected foreign policy because the United States had no real right to take control of an entire hemisphere and call themselves the International Police. by doing this, Roosevelt was almost isolating the United States from the rest of the world by trying to handle everything on their own.
