Immunology - 07 Flashcards
1
Q
What are the characteristics of neutrophils?
A
In both the innate and adaptive response:
- phagocyte
- most predominant granulocyte
- contains granules that have lytic enzymes secreted from the cell
- produce lots of cytokines
- often responsible for the immuno pathology associated with infection (collateral damage to host cells)
2
Q
What are the characteristics of eosinophils?
A
Bilobed nucleus
In the adaptive response:
- major role in parasitic infections
- involved in allergy/hypersensitivity
3
Q
What are the characteristics of basofils?
A
In the adaptive response:
* allergy and hypersensitivity
4
Q
What are the characteristics of mast cells?
A
- Granulocyte (granules contain histamine and other vasoactive molecules)
- high affinity IgE (adaptive) receptors
- major role in allergic reactions
5
Q
What are the characteristics of dendritic cells?
A
- Star-shaped morphology (cytoplasmic projections)
- rarely in circulation
- found predominantly in tissues (skin, lung, G.I., among others)
- phagocytes
- antigen presenting
- instead of recruiting cells to where they are fighting like macrophages, they act as messengers
6
Q
Where do the dendritic cells travel to when they pick up an antigen to present?
A
To the secondary lymphoid organs
7
Q
What are the characteristics of lymphoid cells?
A
- B, T, NK cells
- 20-40% of the body’s WBC’s
- 99% of the cells in lymph
- approximately 1 trillion lymphocytes in circulation (blood and lymph)
- can migrate into the tissue spaces and lymphoid organs
8
Q
What are the two main types of adaptive immune responses?
A
- Humoral (antibodies (B cells) )
* Cell-mediated (T cells)
