Immunology - 05 Flashcards
What are the symptoms of inflammation?
- rubor (redness)
- calor (heat)
- dolor (pain)
- tumor (swelling)
What are the functions of inflammation?
- To remove or limit the spread of the injurious agent
* repair tissue and cleanup damage
What is the process by which we get fever?
1 - IL-1 secreted by phagocytes travels in blood to hypothalamus
2 - hypothalamus secretes prostaglandin, which resets hypothalamic thermostat
3 - nerve impulses cause shivering, higher metabolic rate, inhibition of sweating, and vasoconstriction
4 - these increase body temperature to the point set by the hypothalamic thermostat
Is fever considered part of the localized immune response or the systemic arm?
The systemic arm. It is an acute phase response
Is the adaptive immune response specific to a given antigen?
Yes
What cells are involved in the immune response? And what is a common feature among these cells?
- Macrophages
- dendritic cells
- granulocytes
- B lymphocytes
- T lymphocytes
- NK cells
The common feature is that they all come from the same progenitor cell
What does the common myeloid precursor give rise to?
- Monocytes
- macrophages
- mast cells
- dendritic cells
All start with the letter M except dendritic cells
What does the common lymphoid precursor give rise to?
- B cells
- T cells
- NK cells
