immunity and disease Flashcards
describe innate immunity
non specific, mechanisms are present before infection
function of skin for innate immunity?
outer layer of keratin forms a mechanical barrier, dead skin cells are sloughed off, sweat and oils contain anti-microbial chemicals
functions of mucous membranes for innate immunity?
normal flow of mucus washes bacteria and virus off mucous membranes, cilia protect the respiratory tract, acid in the stomach and vagina
chemical barriers within innate immunity?
proteins and interferons
cellular defences of innate immunity?
phagocytosis
examples of granulocytes?
neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils
function of granulocytes?
remove dead cells and micro-organisms
examples of monocytes?
macrophages
function of monocytes?
serve as filters for trapping microbes
what is adaptive immune response?
specific, cell-mediated and humoral immunity
where are lymphocytes produced?`
bone marrow.
where do B cells and T cells mature?
B cells - mature in bone marrow, then concentrate in lymph nodes and spleen. T cells - mature in thymus
function of B cells
secrete and produce antibodies, involved in humoral immunity and recognise pathogens outside of cells. they become memory cells
function of T cells
directly attack invaders - some can recognise and destroy cancer cells
how do vaccinations work?
stimulates own immune system to elicit an adaptive immune response to prevent further infection
