Immunisations Flashcards
what is the aim of vaccines?
control communicable diseases
two ways to control disease
- primary= prevent onset with vaccines
2. secondary= alter course with immunoglobulins
two types of vaccines
live
inactivated
contra-indications to vaccines
anaphylaxis live in immunosuppressed and pregnancy egg allergy latex allergy acute/evolving illness
what vaccines cannot be taken if egg allergy?
yellow fever
flu
3 immunological mechanisms
- active
- passive
- heard
what is active immune response?
weakened pathogens illicit immune response and production of antibodies
what is passive immune response?
transfer of pre-formed antibodies (immunoglobulins)
what is herd immunity?
vaccinated individuals stop transmission and reduce chance of an unvaccinated individual getting the disease
define elimination of disease
reduction to zero of incidences of specified disease in an area
define eradication of disease
permanent reduction to zero worldwide
