Imaging in inflammatory disorders and infection Flashcards
Molecular imaging
Radionuclide imaging eg PET
Radioactive element and pharmaceutical element
PET
Cyclotron produced isotopes with extremely short half lives and emit positrons
Bump particles with oxygen rich water and combine with ligand
What does PET show?
Physiological function of organs
PET tracer
Gamma emitted by positron - emitting radionuclide
FDG
Radiotracer used to show tissues that use glucose
Ideal isotope for labelling (5)
- Half life similar to length of examination
- Gamma emitter
- Energy 50-300keV
- Readily available radionuclide
- Easily bound to pharmaceutical component
Gamma radiation
Occurs due to radioactive decay of unstable isotope and has a high frequency and energy
Gamma camera ENERGY
Nuclear => Gamma => light EM => electrical
nucleus from patient image crystal to display
SPECT
CT version of nuclear medicine ( tracer used)
What does SPECT look at?
Brain and cardiac studies using roatating gamma cameras
What does SPECT show?
Blood flow
