ILD Pathology Flashcards
in sarcoidosis, in the lungs what are the two common findings?
granulomas
hilar lymphadenopathy
what is another name for hypersensitivity pneumonitis?
extrinsic allergic alveolitis
what is seen histologically in hypersensitiity pneumonitis?
bilateral interstitial linear or nodular pattern inflammation granulommas
how do granulommas in hypersens pneumonitis appear?
they are patchy and loosely formed
what cells predominate the granulomas in hypersens pneumonitis?
lymphocytes and histios with giant cells
what does pneumoconiosis mean?
dust in the lung
what are the two fibrogenic causes of pneumoconiosis?
silica
asbestosis
what is the inert cause of pneumoconiosis?
coal
is silicosis in upper or lower lobes? what does it look like on X ray?
upper looks nodular
what causes the formations of nodules in silicosis?
deposition of fibroblasts that lay down collagen
what is the shape of asbestos?
fibers… long and sharp
where does the response to asbestos occur? what is it called?
in the sub pleural space…patchy sub pleural fibrosis
what is a ferruginous body? what does it look like? what disease?
it is a asbestos deposit…looks like a barbell..in asbestosis in lungs
where does coal pneumoconiosis occur?
in the interstitium
what drug does IPF not respond to?
steroids
what does it mean for IPF to be spatially and temporally hetergenous?
spatially means fibrosis can be next to normal lung
temporally means fibrosis can be at different stages in different locations of the lungs
where does UIP mainly occur in the lung? how is it described?
sub pleural
patchy sub pleural infiltrates
what is buzz word for describing UIP end stage disease?
honeycomb disease
what are the two types of temporal fibrosis you can see in UIP?
fibroblastic and fibrotic
what is the difference in fibroblastic and fibrotic tissue?
fibroblastic means it is active and has more cells (fibroblasts) laying stuff down
fibrotic is pinker and acellular that does not have fibroblasts
the granulomas in sarcoidosis have what type of structure?
very tight and non necrotizing
what is a common animal that has organic antigens that can cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis?
BIRD
describe the pathology of hypersesnitivity pneumonitis
patchy peri bronchiolar and interstitial chronic inflammation….loosely formed granulomas
