Identifying Anatomy Flashcards
identify EJV
large vein, crosses SCM
identify submandibular gland
spherical glandular tissue, medial side of mandible, walnut shaped
identify superior thyroid artery
goes into the top of the thyroid
identify recurrent laryngeal nerve
comes out of the bottom of the thyroid
identify the orbicularis oculi
muscle above eye with orbital part superior to palpebral part. general function is closure of eyelid.
orbital = scrunching of eye
palpebral = blinking
identify parotid duct
small duct coming out of parotid gland aka Stensen’s duct. saliva goes from parotid to mouth via here
identify the maxillary artery
branches off the ECA, may also see superficial temporal artery going straight up but maxillary artery goes more mesially
identify the lingual nerve
nerve going behind the mandible, chorda tympani associated also, submandibular ganglion may be seen on the lingual nerve too (very thin branch)
identify corpus callosum
bit that joins the two hemispheres of the brain and will be joining the two or present on only one half
identify the basilar artery
large artery which runs down midline of brainstem area
identify styloglossus
connects styloid process to the tongue and arches down
identify hyoglossus
muscle straight up and down, below tongue, under styloglossus
identify medial pterygoid
below lateral pterygoid
identify submandibular duct
large duct that extends forwards out of submandibular gland aka Wharton’s duct
identify greater auricular nerve
crosses SCM upwards mesially
identify SCM
easily identifiable, large muscle in the neck that splits the anterior and posterior triangles
identify the stylohyoid muscle
muscle attaches to hyoid bone, splits around central tendon of posterior belly of digastric and becomes tendon; this is quite visible and if it doesn’t split it crosses at the central tendon
identify the mylohyoid muscle
makes up the floor of the mouth, under the anterior & posterior belly of digastric
identify the auditory tube
opening surrounded by tubal tonsil which connects nasopharynx to middle ear aka eustachian tube / pharyngotympanic tube
identify the palatoglossal fold
anteriormost fold seen in the mouth that is in front of the palatine tonsil
identify the vocal folds
folds of tissue, either side of the laryngeal ventricle, deep to cricoid cartilage
identify the cricoid cartilage
immediately below the cricothyroid ligament, above this is the thyroid cartilage
identify the posterior belly of digastric
should see the central tendon connection to anterior belly coming from the chin, stylohyoid crosses at central tendon
identify the hypoglossal nerve
runs underneath the posterior belly of digastric so this may need to be removed / reflected to see this
identify the infraorbital nerve
may be seen in the orbit or above the sinus
identify the greater palatine nerve
runs along the underside of the maxilla
