Icing Flashcards
When do Icing condition exist?
Any time the indicated RAT is + 10C or below, and visible moisture in any form is present.
What isn’t the Icing equipment designed to protect against?
Freezing rain or severe conditions of mixed clear ice
What is cold soak?
An example of a cold soaked airplane is one that has been sitting in sub freezing temperatures overnight leading to important systems like the fuel tanks to possibly developing ice
Operation of the airplane has been demonstrated over prolonged exposure to ground ambient temperature of -40c. What is the limit of exposure?
2 hours at temperatures colder than -40C
1.5 hours at temperatures colder than -18C (Refer to maintenance manual)
If a start is attempted and will not motor up to (?) N2 minimum, (?) the start sequence.
8%, Terminate
What are all of the Anti-Ice and DeIce Systems?
Bleed air heated engine inlets, wing leading edge, and windshield
The pitot tubes, static ports, pylon inlet ducts, and angle of attack probe are electrically heated
Horizontal stabs have boots
Windshield alcohol for left side
Engine and Wing anti ice systems are automatically shut off when N2 falls below _____?
70%
At what temperature shouldn’t you operate tail de ice boots?
If RAT is below -35C
What will cause the ENG ANTI-ICE L/R annunciator to illuminate?
Should the bleed supply fall below 104C
Will also illuminate approx one minute after engine N2 is reduced below 70%
Will the Master Caution light turn on after the ENG ANTI-ICE L/R light comes on?
Yes, approx one minute after the ENG ANTI-ICE light comes on
What will trigger the WING ANTI-ICE L/R annunciator light?
When bleed air temp is less than 110C
In the event of an engine failure can bleed air be supplied to the wing on the affected engine? How?
Yes, the affected ENGINE/WING ANTI-ICE switch should be ENG ON or WING/ENG to maintain pylon inlet heat, then place the wing XFLOW switch to XFLOW.
HIGHER N2 % of 75 to 80 will be needed to provide enough bleed air and to avoid a light from turning on
What does the AUTO switch do for Tail DeIce?
Will activate a controller which will inflate the boots one side at a time and then repeat after 3 minutes
How are the DEICE boots deflated?
A Vacuum is created
If you are above 15,000ft at 70% with engine, wing and windshield bleed air anti ice on, will the DeIce boots be able to activate as well?
No you will need to boost N2 to 73-78%. Monitor Tail DEICE annunciator
How is rain removed on this aircraft at high vs low speeds?
At high speeds the speed and curvature of the windshield naturally without other help
At low speeds (approach and landing/ground ops) the rain removal handle should be pulled up and the W/S BLEED switch should be positioned to LOW.
What are two things to make sure you do when flying in heavy rain?
Ignition on
Airspeed 200 knots
The airplane has been demonstrated to safely operate in standing water/slush depths up to ____?
0.75 inch
Igniters must be on
Why does the Wing Anti ice crossfeed valve fail closed?
Why it fails closed:
* Valve defaults to closed to avoid unintentionally overheating or structurally damaging the wing, especially important on the ground or single-engine operation scenarios.
