Ice and Rain Protection Flashcards
How are the wings and horizontal stabilizer protected from ice?
Hot bleed air
How are the windshields and probes protected from ice?
Electric heat
If the pilots notice ice buildup, what should be done if the automatic system does not turn on?
Set the ice detector override knob to ALL
How does the icing system detect ice?
One ice detector on each side of the aircraft vibrates at a set frequency. The frequency changes when ice adheres to the detector.
When ice is detected by the ice detector, how long does the ice signal remain active?
60 seconds
On the ground, the wing and stabilizer anti-ice is inhibited below _ knots.
25
If equipped with a PPG windshield, when should windshield Heat be used?
All phases of flight
If equipped with a Sierracin windshield, when should windshield Heat be used?
Turn it on at the top of descent or in icing conditions
Which layer of the windshield provides structural integrity?
The inner layer
What happens when the ice detector override knob is set to ENG?
Ice protection is turned on for the engines, but the wing and stabilizer remain in AUTO
What happens when the ice deter knob override knob is set to AUTO?
If ice is detected, bleed air will be sent to the wings, horizontal stabilizer, and engine inlets.
The wing and stab anti-ice is inhibited below 25 kt.
What happens when the ice detector override knob is set to ALL?
Engine anti-ice will turn on
Wing and Stab anti-ice will turn on if speed is greater than 25 kt
What is the maximum time the ice test knob should be held in position 1 or 2?
15 seconds
Is frost permitted to be anywhere on the aircraft for takeoff?
Yes, only on the underside of the wing - up to 3 mm (1/8 in)
When performing ice test B, what are the restriction on the in-flight portion?
Between 2,000 feet - 23,000 feet
TAT less than 10 C
When setting Takeoff Data, what happens when ON is chosen for anti-ice?
The FADEC reduces the target thrust for takeoff
How can the pilot know that the anti-ice valves are open on the engine Inlet, wings, and stab?
OPEN inscriptions illuminated inside the ice protection buttons on the overhead panel
How is Ice Test A performed?
Engine bleeds: Open
Ice detect override knob: ALL
Thrust: 83% N2
Ice test knob: Test 1(2) for 10 seconds; not more than 15 seconds
What messages should be displayed during ice test A?
Four OPEN inscriptions on overhead panel
Four EICAS messages:
ICE DET FAIL
ICE CONDITION
CROSS BLD OPEN
BLD LOW TEMP (Delayed)
