Pharmacodynamics
ibuprofen
inhibits prostaglandin synthesis =
- decreased pain
- decreased inflammation
- decreased pyrexia
Pharmacokinetics
ibuprofen
PO - analgesic
onset - 30-60mins
peak - 1-2hrs
duration - 4-6hrs
PO - antipyretic
onset - 30min-2.5hrs
peak - 2-4hrs
duration - 6-8hrs
ADVERSE EFFECTs
ibuprofen
- unlikely after single pre-hospital dose, however note NSAIDs use hx
- GI upset > ulcer > bleeding > perforation
OVERDOSE
ibuprofen
- GI irritation
- CNS depression
tx - primarily supportive
Warnings // Precautions
ibuprofen
consider ALTERNATIVE TX for pt w/
- GI problems
- renal dysfunction
- significant CVS hx
NSAIDS have the potential to cause significant adverse reactions - the RISK increases w/ dose, therapy and underlying risk factors
DRUG INTERACTIONs
ibuprofen
NSAID may increase BP, limiting effects of ANTI-HYPERTENSIVES
