glucagon Flashcards
Classification
glucagon
- pancreatic hormone
- insulin antagonist
INDICATIONs
glucagon
EMR
- confirmed or suspected hypoglycemia w/o IV access
*EMR requires scope expansioin education
CONTRAINDICATIONs
Glucagon
- hypersensitivity
- < 4y/o
- Pheochromocytoma
- Insulionma
Dosage - Adult/Pediatric
Glucagon
EMR
3mg IN or 1mg IM
if no clinical response within 15mins - ☎️ cliniCALL for ? 2nd dose
Pharmacodynamic
Glucagon
- accelerates the breakdown of glycogen (glycogenolysis) to glucose in the liver
- inhibits glycogen synthesis
only effective in treating hypoglycaemia if liver glycogen is available
Pharmacokinetics
Glucagon
IN
onset - 15mins
peak - 15mins
duration - 90mins
Warnings // Precautions
Glucagon
- Insulinoma - may stimulate further release of insulin and precipitate/worsen hypoglycaemia
- Pheochromocytoma - may cause release of catecholamines which may lead to significant HTN, tachycardia => ICH
Pheochromocytoma - adrenal gland cancer, ICH - intracerebral hemorrhage
ADVERSE EFFECTs
Glucagon
- NVD, hypokalemia, urticaria, resp. distress, hypotension
- transient increase in BP and HR
OVERDOSE
Glucagon
- excessive parenteral admin => NVD
- oral ingestion unlikely - rapidly broken down in GI tract
DRUG INTERACTIONs
Glucagon
Hypoglycemia 2nd to ETOH+ consumption is unlikely reversible by glucagon
