Hypothalamic Nuclei Flashcards
Suprachiasmatic nucleus function
Circadian rhythm
Suprachiasmatic nucleus lesion
Lesion → sleep-rhythm disorder
Preoptic nucleus function
Secretes GnRH to stimulate LH and FSH in the anterior pituitary, endocrine regulation of sexual behavior, thermoregulation (Conti, 2018)
Preoptic nucleus lesion
Lesions (before puberty) → arrested sexual development
Lesions (after puberty) → amenorrhea or impotence
Supraoptic nucleus function
Produces oxytocin (parturition and milk let-down reflex), and ADH (fluid balance)
Supraoptic nucleus lesion
Lesions → diabetes insipidus
Paraventricular nucleus function
Regulates secretion of oxytocin (parturition and milk let-down reflex) and ADH (fluid balance), secretes corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)
Paraventricular nucleus lesion
Lesions → diabetes insipidus
Anterior nucleus function
Regulates parasympathetics to keep cool (thermoregulation)
Anterior nucleus lesion
Lesions → hyperthermia
Posterior nucleus function
Regulates sympathetics to keep warm (thermoregulation)
Posterior nucleus lesion
Lesions → hypothermia
Arcuate nucleus function
Releases dopamine, GHRH to anterior pituitary, body-weight regulation (stimulates appetite and sensitive to leptin)
Arcuate nucleus lesion
Lesions → Galactorrhea and amenorrhea
Dorsomedial nucleus function
Body-weight regulation (stimulates appetite and sensitive to leptin), emotion (rage), libido, circadian activity
