Hyperadrenocorticism Flashcards
Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s) primarily effects dogs and occasionally cats with _______________
Diabetes mellitus
Two possible causes of hyperadrenocorticism (cushing’s) are
- Pituitary tumor
- Adrenal tumor
When hyperadrenocorticism is caused by a pituitary tumor what will be increased.
And what will be increased from an adrenal tumor
Pituitary: Increased ACTH
Adrenal: Increased cortisol
Six clinical signs of Hyperadrenocorticism
- Weight gain
- Increased appetite
- Lethargy/muscle weakness from steroids
- PU/PD
- Thin skin
- Alopecia
Physical exam findings for hyperadrenocorticism (4)
- Thin haircoat on trunk
- Pot belly
- Dermatopathy (infections)
- UTI
Why would a UTI manifest during hyperadrenocorticism
Increased glucocorticoids cause increased blood glucose, leading to increased urine glucose, and bacteria like sugar
Diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism (chushing’s) 5
- MDB
- Clinical signs
- ACTH level
- ACTH stimulation
- Dexamethasone suppression
Hyperadrenocorticism therapy (2)
Pituitary: medical
Adrenal: surgical removal
