A condition in which obstruction to urine flow downstream results in hydrostatic dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces

Describe the pathophysiology of hydronephrosis

A

Back pressure (any obstruction, stone, tumour) → collecting system continues to dilate and renal parenchyma becomes atrophic

How is hydronephrosis managed?

A

Removal of obstruction and drainage of accumulated urine
