What is the function of the Power Transfer Unit?

A

The PTU is a bi directional hydraulic motor/pump which provides an alternative power source to either the Green or Yellow hydraulic systems.

It transfers power not fluid

What conditions will auto inhibit the PTU operation

A
  1. When the ENG MASTER switches are in opposite positions(one ON, one OFF) and EITHER
    A. Parking brake is on OR,
    B. Nose wheel steering is disconnected by towing lever in nose gear
  2. When the Yellow electric pump is activated through either cargo doors operation

  1. Green pointer represents fluid quantity within the respective reservoir
  2. Green rectangle at the top of the range represents a full quantity amount
  3. Amber rectangle at bottom of the range represents low quantity and will result in a ECAM RSVR LO LVL caution message

Where must the hyd reservoir quantity pointer be during preflight?

A

It must be within the green rectangle during aircraft preflight(system not pressurized) or the system must be serviced

  2. Amber arrows indicate the PTU pb has either been selected OFF, or the PTU is inhibited
  3. Solid green arrows pointing to the left indicate that the PTU is supplying pressure to the Green hyd sys
  4. Solid green arrows pointing to the right indicate that the PTU is supplying pressure to the Yellow hyd sys

A

Illuminates as the result of issues within either the Hreen or Yellow hydraulic system reservoirs to include any of the following:

  1. An overhead of hydraulic fluid
  2. Low air pressure
  3. Low hydraulic fluid level

Note: the FAULT light does not represent the status or condition of the PTU

What’s the function of the RAT MAN ON pb?

  1. Used to manually deploy the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) which provides alternate power to pressurize the Blue hydraulic system
  2. The emergency generator is not energized with use of this pb

Note: the RAT will not automatically deploy with a failure of the Blue electric pump. The pilot must use the RAT MAN ON pb

  2. The white hollow triangle next to the white RAT indication on the ECAM HYD page turns solid green, and a line connects it to the rest of the Blue system indications
