Flight Management, Navigation, Radar Flashcards
Describe the operating modes of the Flight Management Guidance Computers(FMCG).
(Pic)
- Dual:
A. Normal mode of operation
B. Both FMCGs are sync’ed,
Meaning data entered into one multi
Function Control and Display Unit
(MCDU) is also transferred to the other
FMCG - Single:
A. FMCG operating mode when it is the sole
Operating FMCG. The other one has
Failed
B. Provides all related functions, with some
Limitations
C. Indications of a failed FMGC include:
1. 1FD1 or 2FD2 in Column 5 of the FMAs
Indicating that the FDs are using the
Same FMCG as a source of
Guidance
2. OPP FMCG IN PROCESS message in
MCDU scratchpad
3. MAP NOT AVAIL or SET OFFSIDE RNG/
MODE messages on the failed side’s
ND, depending on EFIS Control Panel
Settings - Independent:
A. Mode of operation caused by a
Significant difference between the two
FMCGs
B. There is no synchronization of data
Between the FMCGs
C. Indications include the INDEPENDENT
OPERATION message in the scratchpad
Of both MCDUs and an illuminated
Amber IND light on the top of the MCDU
Cases
What are the two failure conditions of the FMGC?
Pic
- Failed:
A. The FMGC has completely
Stopped sending or receiving
Data
B. Unavailable for the remainder of the flight
C. Indications:
1. 1FD1 or 2FD2 in Column 5 of FMA
2. OPP FMGC IN PROCESS msg in the
Operating MCDU scratchpad
3. MAP NOT AVAIL and SET OFFSIDE/
MODE msg on the affected ND - Reset:
A. Error has occurred within the FMGCs
Software processing
B. FMGC will attempt to auto restore
Itself. If successful the FMGC will
Resume norm ops
C. Indications:
1. Same as failure
D. If auto resychronization occurs, the
MCDU MENU page will appear
Describe the FMGCs navigation aid auto tuning feature
- Provides localizer guidance during takeoff roll for runways served by an ILS
- Auto tuned VOR and DME stations enroute for position and orientation updating
- Auto tuned the ILS frequency for final approach guidance, when the ILS approach has been loaded into the flight plan
How is VOR info displayed on the ND and ILS information displayed on the PFD?
(Pic)
- VOR info on the NDs:
A. When respective EFIS VOR1
Or 2 Selector switches are
Placed in the VOR1 or 2 position
B. When identified by the FMS the stations
Three letter identifier will be displayed - ILS info on the PFDs:
A. When respective EFIS (I)LS pb is selected
B. When identified by the FMS the stations
Four letter identifier will be displayed
What’s the function of the STBY NAV key on the RMP?
Pic
- When selected:
A. Activates the STBY NAV
(ILS, VOR, ADF) Selector
Keys PF the respective RMP
B. Deactivates the auto tuning capability
Of the FMGCs
C. The MCDU RAD NAV page is unusable
D. Green light illuminates next to the key
Indicating activation
E. An R appears next to the tuned VOR freq
What are the indications of a tuned VOR on the ND?
Pic
- If a station has been auto by the FMGCs it will ONLY contain the stations three letter identifier
- If the station has been manually tuned by the MCDUs RAD NAV page, an underlined M appears next to the stations three letter identifier
A. Referred to as Hard Tuned - If the station has been manually tuned by an RMPs Standby NAV keys, an underlined R appears next to the stations three letter identifier
A. Referred to as Remotely Tuned
What’s the function of the ADIRU Mode Selector?
Pic
- OFF -depowered, aircrafts present location stored
- NAV - establishes power, initiates IR alignment
- ATT - provides only Attitude and Heading info following an attempt at an inflight realignment
What’s the time required for a full ADIRS alignment verses a quick realignment?
- Full: 5-10 minutes
2. Quick: 30 sec - 3 minutes
How do you perform a quick realignment of the ADIRUs?
Move all three mode Selector switches from NAV to OFF and back to NAV within 5 sec of selecting them to OFF
What’s the meaning of a steady IR ALIGN light and a flashing IR ALIGN light?
(Pic)
- Steady: the respective ADIRU is operating normally in the alignment mode
- Flashing: a fault has occurred during ADIRUs alignment, possibly caused by:
A. Movement of aircraft during alignment
B. A present position entry was never made
On the MCDUs INIT page, and 1 minute
Remains in the alignment process
C. The position stored at shutdown by the
IRU(s) differs from the present position
Entered in the MCDU
What’s the meaning of the ON BAT (Amber) light on the ADIRS Panel?
(Pic)
- Illuminates steady when one or more ADIRU is operating on battery power
- Appears for 5 seconds when an ADIRU Mode Selector is placed from OFF to NAV as an indication that the respective ADIRU is capable of operating on battery power when required
Will the ON BAT light illuminate during a quick realignment?
No
What is the function of the radars MODE Selector knob?
Pic
- WX: displays precipitation returns
A. Black - min/no intensity
B. Green - low intensity
C. Amber - moderate intensity
D. Red - higher intensity (saturation) - WX+T: displays both precip returns and turn.
A. Magenta - represents turbulence - TURB: displays only areas of turbulence in magenta
A. ND range must be set to 40 miles or less
For the display of turbulence - MAP: ground mapping mode
A. Black - water or radar shadow
B. Green - ground returns
C. Amber - man made structures or high
Terrain
What’s the radars functionality during auto self test?
Pic
- When first turned on, the radar is fully operational and is radiating energy while performing a 45 sec self test
- A warm up period is not required
- Quick self tests are performed at the end of each radar antenna sweep
- Radar system fault/malfunction indications are only displayed on the NDs
What’s the function of the radar GAIN Selector knob?
Pic
Allows for the control of the radars energy beam strength:
1. CAL(calibrated) - provides a predetermined bean power level but may not provide the optimum beam power for a given weather condition
2. MIN to MAX - allows for manual control of the beams strength
A. MIN: greater beam strength than the CAL
Level
B. MAX: most powerful beam strength
C. When in MIN to MAX range, MAN
Appears on the NDs
