Fire Protection. FIRE Flashcards
What are the indications of an APU fire test performed with only battery power
Only on overhead fire panel
- Red guarded fire light
- SQUIB (white) light on the AGENT pb
- DISCH (Amber) light on AGENT pb
Number of halon fire bottles for each engine, APU, Cargo Compartment
1 Eng. - each has 2 bottles
- APU - 1 bottle
- Forward and aft cargo share 1 bottle
Flight deck indications of lav smoke
NO flight deck indications that tell the pilot specifically which lav is effected
Only flight attendants can tell
Type of smoke detection system for avionics compartment
- Smoke detectors that only sense particles
2. NO heat sensing
Why do the indications of a CARGO SMOKE occur twice during a test
Each channel of the SDCU is tested which is a dual channel computer called the Smoke Detection Control Unit
How could the CARGO SMOKE system potentially give a false smoke indication
1 particulates
- De icing fumes
- Exhaust from nearby external power equipment
- Taxiing aircraft
When on ground with cargo doors open, visually verify smoke before discharging
Exterior indications of an APU Fire
Horn at nose of aircraft
Red APU FIRE light on exterior service bay Interphone Panel
What are the indications of an engine fire and a APU fire.
Pic
- Common to both -
A. Continuous Repetitive Chime
(CRC) sounds
B. Red master warning light flashes
C. Respective red guarded FIRE light
Illuminates on the overhead FIRE
Panel - Engine Fire
A. Red ENG 1(2) FIRE message and
Associated action steps appear in the
E/WD memo section
B. ENGINE page appears on the SD
C. FIRE light illuminates for the affected
Engine on the ENG control panel - APU fire
A. Red APU FIRE message and associated
Action steps appear in the E/WD memo
Section
B. APU page appears on the SD
What’s the difference between an on ground APU fire verse an in flight fire detection/Protection system
(Pic)
- On ground - APU master computer will auto perform an APU EMER SHUTDOWN and discharge the APU fire extinguisher
- In flight - APU must be manually shut down by use of the APU FIRE pb and the fire extinguisher must be manually discharged using the AGENT pb
Can the APU be manually shut down from outside the aircraft?
Pic
Yes, using the guarded APU SHUT OFF pb located on the exterior Service Bay Interphone Panel. However for extinguisher discharge is not possible
What are the indications of lavatory smoke
Pic
- Continuous Repetitive Chime(CRC) sounds
- MASTER WARN lights flash
- SMOKE LAVATORY SMOKE message appears on the E/WD memo section
What are the methods of monitoring the Aft Cargo compartments temperature
(Pic)
The Aft Cargo compartment temperature can be monitored from either:
- The ECAM CRUISE page
- The ECAM COND page
Note: smoke detectors sense particulates and therefore all indications of cargo smoke remain following the discharge of the extinguisher due to halon agent particulates replacing smoke particulates.
What are the indications for cargo smoke?

- Continuous Repetitive Chime
(CRC) sounds - MASTER WARN lights flash
- SMOKE light illuminates on the overhead CARGO SMOKE panel for the affected cargo compartment
