Hydrated solids Flashcards
What are hydrated solids
some crystals contain water of crystallisation, this means there are water molecules locked inside their crystal structure
Use sodium carbonate to show the formula of a hydrated solid and what does it show
Na₂CO₃ .10H₂O
This shows that for every one mole of sodium carbonate there are 10 moles of water
What is the product after heating hydrated solid
anhydrous solid (without water)
Hydrated solid experiment (How to find the number of moles of water in a hydrated solid)
take a crucible of known mass of the hydrated solid and heat it to evaporate the water until it reaches a constant mass. Work out the water loss (anhydrous solid - start mass) and convert mass of anhydrous solid and water top moles and divide by smallest value
