Human Reproduction - Oogenesis Flashcards
Oogenesis
Process of producing egg cells through meiosis.
Primordial Follicle
Undifferentiated cell in the ovary that will develop into an egg.
Follicle
General term for cells that will become eggs; stimulated by FSH.
Graffian Follicle
Mature follicle containing an oocyte ready for ovulation.
Oocyte
Immature egg cell within a follicle.
Corpus Luteum
Structure formed from the remnants of a mature follicle after ovulation.
FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)
Pituitary gland hormone that stimulates follicle growth.
LH (Luteinizing Hormone)
Pituitary gland hormone responsible for ovulation.
Ovulation
Release of the egg cell from the ovary into the fallopian tube.
Progesterone
Hormone secreted by the corpus luteum to prepare the uterus for pregnancy.
Polar Body
Small cells produced during oogenesis that do not develop into eggs.
Zona Pellucida
Protective jelly-like layer surrounding the egg.
Spermatogenesis
Process of producing sperm cells through meiosis.
Diploid
Cells with the full complement of chromosomes (2n).
Haploid
Cells with half the number of chromosomes (n).
