Genetics Flashcards
Chromatin Network
The long, twisted structure containing DNA in a cell’s nucleus during interphase.
Chromosomes
There are 46 in humans, carrying DNA; visible during cell division (meiosis/mitosis).
Genes
Segments of chromosomes coding for specific traits like height, eye color, hair texture.
Alleles
Variations of genes, e.g., blue eyes allele, green eyes allele.
Paternal and Maternal Chromosomes
Inherited from parents, separated during meiosis for gamete formation.
Dominant Alleles
Expressed physically even when only one is present, represented by capital letters.
Recessive Alleles
Require two copies for expression, represented by lowercase letters.
Homozygous Dominant
Two identical dominant alleles (e.g., BB for brown eyes).
Homozygous Recessive
Two identical recessive alleles (e.g., bb for blue eyes).
Heterozygous
One dominant and one recessive allele (e.g., Bb).
