Gestation and Embryonic Layers Flashcards
Embryonic Layers : Chorion
Outermost membrane, grows chorionic villi for attachment and nutrient exchange.
Embryonic layers : Placenta
Temporary organ, diffuses oxygen and nutrients, removes waste, secretes progesterone.
Embryonic Layers : Amnion
Surrounds fetus, secretes amniotic fluid for protection and support.
Embryonic Layers : Umbilical Cord
Connects fetus to placenta, contains umbilical vein (oxygen/nutrient) and umbilical artery (deoxygenated/waste).
Functions of Chorion
- Outer membrane with chorionic villi.
- Attaches to endometrium.
- Villi provide large surface area for nutrient exchange.
- Villi grow into placenta.
Functions of Placenta
- Temporary organ, vital during pregnancy.
- Diffuses oxygen, nutrients, removes fetal waste.
- Secretes progesterone to maintain pregnancy.
- Acts as a barrier and protection against viruses.
Functions of Amnion
- Surrounds fetus, secretes amniotic fluid.
- Fluid provides cushioning, support, and protection.
- Acts as a buffer against temperature changes.
- Prevents mechanical injury to the fetus.
Functions of Umbilical Cord
- Connects fetus to placenta.
- Contains umbilical vein (oxygen/nutrient transport to fetus).
- Contains umbilical artery (deoxygenated/waste transport away from fetus).
Umbilical Cord Blood Vessels : Umbilical Vein
Carries oxygenated blood and nutrients to fetus.
Umbilical Cord Blood Vessels : Umbilical Artery
Carries deoxygenated blood and waste away from fetus.
