Human Reproduction Flashcards
Gametogenesis
What is Gametogenesis
Gametogenesis refers to the process by which spermatozoa are produces from the germinal epithelium of the testes. Oogenesis refers to the process by which ova are produced from the germinal epithelium of the ovaries. Gametogenesis is a general term which includes spermatogenesis and oogenesis i.e. it refers to the process by which gametes are produced from the Germinal epithelium of the sex organs
What is Spermatogenesis
The broad pattern of the process of spermatogenesis is as follows:
Cells of the germinal epithelium lining the seminiferous undergo meiosis
Each cell that undergoes meiosis produces four haploid spermatids
Each spermatid matures to form a spermatozoan
The Spermatozoan
Each Spermatozoan is made up of a head, a middle piece and a long tail:
The head is made up of mainly the nucleus which contains the 22 autosomes (X or Y) chromosomes with nuclear DNA. In the front of the head is the acrosome which contains enzymes that help in penetrating ovum
The Middle piece contains numerous mitochondria to provide energy for locomotion. The mitochondria contains mitochondrial (mtDNA)
The long tail enables the spermatozoan to swim
