Human Nervous Systems and Sense Organs Flashcards
What are Nervous Tissues
Nerves are composed of nerve fibres held together by connective tissue.
The nerve fibres in turn are made up of specialised nerve cells called neurons
What are Sensory Neurons
Sensory Neurons are neurons which carry impulses from the receptors (nerve endings or sense organs) to the Central Nervous System (Brain and Spinal Cord)
What are Motor Neurons
Motor Neurons are neurons which carry impulses from the Central Nervous System to the effectors (Muscles or Glands)
What are Connector Neurons
Connector Neurons/ Interneurons are neurons which carry impulses inside the Central Nervous System from a Sensory Neuron to a Motor Neuron
What is the Cell Body
The Cell Body has one or more branching cytoplasmic threads called Dendrites which carry impulses towards the cell body:
A Prominent Nucleus
Cytoplasm with Nissl Granules which produce substances for the transmission of nerve impulses
Mitochondria, Ribosomes and Endoplasmic Reticulum
What is the Axon
The Axon conducts impulses away from the Cell Body
It has branched endings called terminal branches
It is usually covered by two membranes viz. a Myelin Sheath and Neurilemma
