HS1-6 Lymphatic System Flashcards
What are the three functions of the lymphatic system?
drainage of excess fluid and large molecules; absorption and transport of dietary fat; defense mechanisms
Where do lymphatic capillaries begin and end?
begin at intercellular spaces of tissues and lead to increasingly larger vessels
What is the function of superficial lymphatic vessels?
drain the skin and subcutaneous tissue
The superficial lymphatic vessels eventually drain into
deep lymphatic vessels
(T/F) Lymphatic vessels do not have valves.
False, lymphatic vessels DO contain valves
What is the function of the right lymphatic duct?
receives lymph from upper right quadrant of body
Where is the right lymphatic duct located?
enters junction of right internal jugular and right subclavian veins
What is the function of the thoracic duct?
receives lymph from other 3 quadrants of body
Where is the thoracic duct located?
starts at cisterna chyli and enters junction of left internal jugular and left subclavian veins
What is the significance of the cisterna chyli?
lymph from digestive tract drains into cisterna chyli
What are lymph nodes?
small masses of lymphatic tissues in series with lymph vessels
What do lymph nodes contain?
contain lymphocytes and macrophages, which filter lymph
What disease tends to spread through the lymphatic system?
metastatic carcinomas
Label the following structures.
