What are the adverse effects of HRT?
Unopposed oestrogen- endometrial, ovarian, breast cancer
Increased risk of stroke, IHD, venous thrombo-embolism
What drug is used to treat infertility?
Clomiphene
What is the action of clomiphene?
Inhibits oestrogen binding in ant. Pit.
Inhibits negative feedback on FSH and LH (LH surge)
Induces ovulation
What drug is used for abortions/induction of labour?
Anti-progestin (mifepristone)
What is the action of anti-protesting?
Partial agonist of progesterone receptor
Sensitises uterus to PG
Causes contraction of SM in uterus
What is the drugs used for prevention of osteoporosis?
1st line: Calcium/Bisphosphonates
Other: HRT, SERM (selective oestrogen receptors modulators)
What is the action of SERMs?
Oestrogenic effect on bone,
reduces osteoclasts activity

Raloxifene (Evista)
What is the use of androgen replacement therapy?
Men with low testosterone
Transgender people

Testosterone replacement
Finasteride
What is the action of finasteride?
Inhibits 5a-reductase
Maintains testosterone levels by preventing conversion into other molecules
What are the used of finasteride in androgen replacement therapy?
Hair loss
Male pattern baldness
BPH
Why would you not give finasteride to a pregnant women?
Causes birth defects
