Anti-virals Flashcards
What drugs are used for influenza A & B?
Oseltamivir (tamiflu)
Zanamivir
Give examples of herpes infections
Cold sores
Encephalitis
Genital infections
Describe the treatment for herpes
Aciclovir
Cidofovir
Foscarnet
What drugs are given for cytomegalovirus?
Ganciclovir (prophylaxis in transplant patients)
Foscarnet
Cidofovir (resistant cases)
What drugs are used for HIV?
Combination of:
Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI)
AND
Nuceloside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI)
AND (one of the following)
Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI)
Protease inhibitor
Integrate inhibitor
CCR5 (entry) inhibitor
Give an example of an NRTI
Lamivudine
Zidovudine
Give an example of an NNRTI
Nevirapine
What are the drugs used for hepatitis B?
Lamivudine
Interferon alpha
Adefovir
What drugs are used for hepatitis C
Sofosbuvir
Interferon alpha
Ribavirin (chronic) with interferon alpha
What is the mechanism of action of oseltamivir/zanamivir? (Treats influenza)
Neuroaminidase inhibitor
Blocks release of newly assembled influenza virons from host cell
What is the mechanism of action of aciclovir?
DNA base analogue
Activated by viral thymidine next kinase
Inhibits viral DNA synthesis
What is aciclovir used to treat?
Herpes, meningitis, encephalitis
What are the ADRs of aciclovir?
Nephrotoxicity CNS symptoms (1-4%) e.g. tremor, myoclonus, hallucinations, coma
At what stage in the infection is aciclovir effective?
In the acute phase when the patient is symptomatic
What is ganciclovir used to treat?
CMV (retinitis & prophylaxis for transplant pts)
What is the mechanism of action of ganciclovir?
Analogue of aciclovir
But activated by a different enzyme
Inhibits viral DNA synthesis
What are the ADRs of ganciclovir?
Myelosuppressive
Carcinogenic/teratogenic
CNS symptoms (5-15%)
What is cidofovir active against?
DS-DNA viruses:
Herpes
Pox
CMV
