GORD after lifestyle changes and antacids prove to be unsuccessful
What are the benefits of H2 receptor antagonists?
Freely available (OTC) Cheap Short half life Safe (minimal side effects and interactions) 80-90% acid suppression
After what treatment method would you try giving PPIs for GORD?
If H2 receptor antagonists are not working
What are the side effects of PPIs?
Diarrhoea Osteoporosis (long term)
What is the mechanism of action of PPI?
Bind to and block active proton pumps (which are activated post eating)
Complete acid suppression
Describe the effects of antacids
Works as buffer for temporary relief

Viscous substance, forms a raft over denuded gastric mucosa, protecting it
