How to keep a disagreement from becoming an argument

A
  1. Welcome the disagreement
  2. Distrust your first instinctive impression
  3. Control your temper
  4. Listen first - don’t resist, debate or defend
  5. Look for areas of agreement -dwell on things you both agree on
  6. Be honest - look for areas where you can admit error and say so, Apologize for your mistakes
  7. Promise to think over your opponents ideas and study them - your opponent may be right
  8. Thank your opponent sincerely for their interest
  9. Postpone action to give both sides the time to think through the problem - suggest that new meeting be held at a later time
