Hormones Flashcards
Gonadootropin (GnRH)
secreted by: hypothalamus
acts upon: anterior pituitary
stimulated release FSH
provide the positive drive for secretion of both LH and FSH by the anterior pituitary
Luteinizing Hormone
secreted by: anterior pituitary
acts upon: ovary
stimulated testosterone production in males
*maturation of follicle and spermatozoa
* induces ovulation and development for the CL
Follicle Stimulating Hormone
secreted by: anterior pituitary
acts upon: ovary
* needed in small amounts
*induces follicular development
* induces estrogen production
* stimulates spermatogenesis
Inhibin Hormone
secreted by: follicle
acts upon: anterior pituitary
* causes a reduction in FSH production by anterior pituitary
Estrogen (Estradiol Hormone)
secreted by: follicle
* responsible for estrus
* influence mobility and secretory function in reproductive tract (uterine milk)
* responsible for early stage development of the mammary gland
Progesterone Hormone
secreted by: corpus lutem
* “hormone of pregnancy”
* maintenance of pregnancy
* final maturation of mammary gland
* reduced excitability of smooth muscle fibers
* negative feedback to the hypothalamus
Oxytocin Hormone
secreted by: posterior pituitary, corpus lutem
acts upon: smooth muscle
*causes contractions of smooth muscle fibers involved in milk “let down”, uterine contractions during parturition, contractions of smooth muscle in uterus and oviducts during mating
Prostaglandin Hormone
secreted by: uterine lining
acts upon: corpus lutem
* produced by endometrium of non pregnant uterus
* causes the regression of the CL
* causes uterine contraction
* gives pregnant or open signal
Interferon Tau
produced by: fertilized ovum
received by: uterus
blocks leuteolysis
*pregnancy recognition signal in cattle and sheep
