Differences between Democrats and Whigs

A
  1. Democrats: most resided in the south, pro slavery, didn’t want a strong government, felt the government should leave business alone, neither helping nor hindering it
  2. Whigs: most resided in the north, believed the government should protect industry with tariffs on imports, with grants of monopolies, with construction of harbors and railroads, with a national banking system

Why did the South secede

A
  1. Knew that Lincoln opposed Slavery, and felt that once he became president, he would abolish it
  2. they also speculated a war wagging and the non existence of the constitution soon to begin and taking away of rights
  3. Mississippi stated that if they submit to the north, they will lose $4 billion for their slaves lives - felt they were being oppressed just as England was oppressing American before

Lincoln’s two key points in 1st inaugural address

A
  1. he will not abolish slavery because he cant; it would mean a constitution amendment and he did not have the authority to do that
  2. he will not let any state secede (they never declare war b/c you can only do so with another county & the confederate was not! - it would mean they admitted to their existence)

Emancipation Proclamation, why was it issued

A
  1. due to run away slaves showing up at Union Army camps, it was unsure as to what their title was
  2. Blacks were beginning to join armies
  3. Lincoln felt that some slaves needed to be abolish in the south; he passed the proclamation giving freedom to slaves in a majority of the confederate states
  4. Was proclaimed during the war and officially passed on Sept. 22, 1862
